What is a "Veterans (Service) Organization"?
This is a question we are frequently asked so we have
decided to share with everyone our response.
First, an organization must be recognized as a VSO under
IRS section 501(c)(19).
Many entities call themselves Veterans Organizations but
are not recognized as such by the United States government.
For more than a decade the CWVA has been so designated by the
federal government.
Second, do not confuse a 501(c)(3) organization with a
501(c)(19) organization. Many folks out there have a "3" designation which basically makes them similar to a
stamp-collecting group. They can be a non-profit group but they
cannot be a "Veterans Organization."

In-Depth Explanation.
