While there are a number of honorable Veterans Service Organizations, there is only one dedicated to exclusively representing the interests of Cold War Veterans — The Cold War Veterans Association (CWVA).*

The Mission of the Cold War Veterans Association is to:

(1) Fight for rights and benefits that Cold War Veterans deserve;

(2) Educate people as to why the Cold War was fought and why vigilance must be maintained; and

(3) Provide a fraternal community for men and women whose patriotism binds them together.

To be eligible for membership, one must have served honorably in the U.S. Armed Forces at some time during the Cold War period (September 2, 1945 – December 26, 1991).

[*The Cold War Veterans Association is a federally-designated, tax-exempt, 501(c)(19) Veterans Service Organization.]

Below are some other VSOs
which are helping to serve American heroes.

The American Legion was chartered by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic, mutual-help, war-time veterans organization.

Membership eligibility in The American Legion is based on honorable federal active duty service with the U.S. Armed Forces between --

  • April 6, 1917 to November 11, 1918 (World War I)

  • December 7, 1941 to December 31, 1946 (World War II)

  • June 25, 1950 to January 31, 1955 (Korean War)

  • February 28, 1961 to May 7, 1975 (Vietnam War)

  • August 24, 1982 to July 31, 1984 (Lebanon/Grenada)

  • December 20, 1989 to January 31, 1990 (Operation Just Cause - Panama)

  • August 2, 1990 to today* (Operation Desert Shield/Storm)

*Because eligibility dates remain open, all members of the U.S. Armed Forces are eligible to join The American Legion at this time, until the date of the end of hostilities as determined by the government of the United States.

Another VSO is AMVETS.

On July 23, 1947, President Truman signed the AMVETS Charter.

In recognition of the sacrifices made by all veterans and service personnel, membership in AMVETS is open to anyone who is currently serving, or who has honorably served, in the Armed Forces of the United States--to include National Guard and Reserve components--at anytime after September 15, 1940.

The VFW is another great VSO.  To be a member, one must generally have served in a combat zone or theater.

For over a century, the VFW has helped American veterans by providing programs and services which:

  • strengthen comradeship among members

  • perpetuate the memory and history of fallen soldiers

  • foster patriotism

  • defend the Constitution

  • promote service to community and country
