Dear Chairman Surbaugh, County Commissioners, and Assembled Guests:

For several years, we have been fortunate to have Cold War Victory Day proclaimed here in Johnson County.  The overwhelming support we have received is both generous and appreciated.  With our receipt of this year's proclamation I ask that each of you help us celebrate this holiday by embracing two words: Challenge and Compassion.

As fellow lovers of freedom I ask that you challenge yourselves to read books and engage in conversations that challenge what you think and believe so that as fellow sojourners on the road to liberty we may continue to grow and develop into "a more perfect union."

Concomitant with this challenge I ask that all of us embrace more fully the cause of compassion.

As many of you are already experiencing, we are in difficult economic times.  My fear is that our economy will continue to decline and that our hardships will increase in the months if not years to come.

In this period of economic suffering I ask that each of us make a special effort to demonstrate compassion to one another.  Whenever possible, reach out to someone who is less fortunate.  When you are in a restaurant or a retail establishment and you receive very good or excellent service, go out of your way to let management know how much you appreciate those who make a special effort.  And it is especially helpful if you contact the folks at "home office" to let them know how much you appreciate someone in your community.

In short, take no one for granted.  Remember, we are all in this together and only together in loving friendship can we truly be a great republic.

Thank you and may God bless each and everyone of you.
